Assignment 1: Triptych Montage
When worlds collide, I imagine interesting things could happen. That is the premise for my triptych montage. Using a combination of images found on the Internet, magazines and/or books, this assignment combines all of those elements in order to create something new.
What do UFOs, a tropical paradise, and war-torn victims all have in common? Seemingly not much, which is the point. Could these places exist simultaneously and within the same realm? What would happen if one is merged with the other? What would that new world look like?
Each panel in this triptych montage is made up of the same image clips, simply re-arranged to give a new feel each time. When combined and displayed together, one could draw a story and see how these worlds may interact.
About this Assignment
The goal of this assignment was to create a digital triptych montage using images found on the Internet, magazines or books, and from another source of our choice.
Triptych, specifically, describes the three-panel setup, where there are two winged panels that fold over the larger center one. Montage, on the other hand, describes "the technique of combining single composition pictorial elements from various sources, as parts of different photographs or fragments of printing, either to give the illusion that the elements belong together originally or to allow each element to retain its seperate identity as a means of adding interest and meaning to the composition."
To create the final composition, we were asked to collect 25 images (10 scanned, 10 found on the Internet, and 5 from a source of our choice). Using the tools available in Adobe Photoshop, I needed to use the same source images to create completely different compositions for each panel of the triptych montage. Overall, the three panels can create a narrative, or can stand on their own. Can you figure out the underlying messages within it?
This is my first project in Clint Sleeper's ART 245 Digital Media I class. The next step is to take one of the three panels and animate it. It's about to get crazy!
